Missouri Surveys were originally measured using a compass and chain. Townships were to be created with 36 square mile sections. Stones and posts were set at Section Corners and 1/4 Corners. These corners are carefully examined by modern day surveyors due to the fact that all property descriptions are created from them. Our job as surveyors today are to retrace the footsteps of the original surveyor. Research of old records helps us to identify these previously measured lines. Many of our original corner monuments have been destroyed. Corners today are marked with iron and or aluminum monuments
Old Survey Markers
Record surveys will have a wide variety of monuments placed at the corners. Before the iron age most corners were monumented with stones. Some would be marked but many were not. The positions of these monuments are extreamly important and not to be disturbed. County Surveyors will re-monument these poistions with more identifiable markers to preserve the location of the corner once they are discovered. One of the most satisfiying parts of surveying is finding monuments placed over 180 years ago back when time ticked a little slower. Pictured below is a sandstone bearing markings of the corner located at the Common Corner to Sections 25, 26, 35, & 36, T27N, R26W, Lawrence County, MO. The position of this Section Corner was originaly monumented on April 14'th, 1835. This monument has now been replaced with a 36" long by 2 1/2" diameter Aluminum Pipe Monument.
Lawrence County Surveyor D. Aaron Austin
Pictured below is a monument having been set on February 25'th, 1918 by County Surveyor W. G. Heagerty at the S 1/4 Corner of Sec. 6, T26N, R26W, Lawrence County, Mo. Set below the Limestone was a iron rod with s spur pinion. Had it not been for the survey notes explaining what was set at this position, the corner position could have ben lost. This monument has now been replaced with a 36" long by 2 1/2" diameter Aluminum Pipe Monument.
